Bucket O' Food List

A belated Happy New Year to you all.

I've made a resolution. I'm definitely going to post more on my blog this year than I did last year. Fortunately, that won't be too difficult. If I manage one more I'll have doubled my output.

But enough about resolutions and writing. I'm here to talk about food.

It's been almost three and a half years since I've had a cigarette. I haven't slipped up one time. Nope. Not once. But, you know, this is not going to be a preachy post. I don't consider myself an ex-smoker anyhow. I consider myself a non-practcing smoker. Once the Death Comet is confirmed to be approaching Earth, I'll be the first one in line at the Smoke Shoppe, looking for a carton of Kents.

I can hear you telling me, “You said we were going to talk about food. All you're talking about is cigarettes.”

Well, that's true to a degree. But I'll urge patience, Grasshopper. It's merely a lead in.

See, when people give up one sin, they often take up another in its place. In my case, I've replaced the cigarettes with food. Mostly carbs or fats. I eat lots of cheese. Fresh croissants are wonderful with butter and blackberry jam. Bagels with cream cheese are good too. If I make a peanut butter sammich, it has to have butter on it too.

You get the picture. The picture is not pretty. It's about fifty pounds heavier than it used to be. It needs to get lighter.

I've decided I've got to combat the carbs and fats, but before I do I need to run through my Bucket O' Food List one time.

What's a Bucket O' Food List, you ask? I know you know that a Bucket List is a list of all the things you want to do before you croak. A Bucket O' Food List is the same thing, except it's only about food. And even though I'm not planning on croaking any time soon, I still see no reason to avoid these delicious food items, especially seeing as though I'm going to have to give them up soon.

So here's my Bucket O' Food List, presented in no particular order:

  1. A shore dinner, including steamed lobster, clams on the half shell and steamers, corn on the cob and roasted 'taters. Lots of butter shall be consumed with this meal.
  2. A Maine blueberry pie.
  3. The above mentioned fresh croissant with butter and blackberry jam.
  4. Chocolate chip cookies.
  5. A boneless leg of lamb, spit roasted medium rare, covered with my mystery dry rub and poked and larded with a bunch of garlic cloves, spinach sprinkled with vinegar (butter added), baked potato with sour cream, chives, salt, pepper, butter.
  6. Home made lemon sherbet.
  7. A complete Thanksgiving dinner, even if it isn't Thanksgiving. No green bean casserole.
  8. Enough cashews in one sitting to seriously hurt me.
  9. A bagel with lox, onions and cream cheese from Zingerman's. And since I'm already there, I'll get a pastrami on rye for dessert.
  10. Three slightly pan seared sea scallops, covered with a pat of sherry butter, and placed on a bed of cous-cous cooked in chicken broth, then mixed with finely chopped green onions and spearmint, grilled thinly sliced eggplant, lightly brushed with olive oil, and a couple of crabcakes from Phillip's Restaurant in Baltimore. All preceded by a shrimp cocktail. And oysters on the half shell. With horseradish, lemon and hot sauce. And don't skimp on the salt and pepper.
  11. A pizza from Bocce's Pizzeria in Buffalo. Double cheese and double pepperoni.
  12. One Beef on Weck, loaded with horseradish, from pretty much any sleazy bar in Buffalo.
  13. An Italian sausage sub with caramelized green peppers and onions.
  14. Hot peach cobbler served with a scoop of homemade vanilla ice cream.

I'll tick these off over time. Yes, I will. And as soon as I'm done I'll be ready to lead an austere life and start shedding the pounds. You'll be proud of me too, won't you?

So what are the foods on your Bucket O' Food List? What do you want to make sure you eat before you croak or swear off good food? Let me know in the comments section. And if it sounds really good I'll not only add it to my list, I'll beg you for the recipe.

  2. Now, you know you gotta give me that recipe for apple nut cake with rum sauce. And what is Quinoa, anyhow? Although anything with sausage and peppers can't be bad.

    Love ya, Bea. :)

    2. Ooo. Thanks, Bea. Just found the recipe in email. I'll be hoping on that one real soon.

But you still have to tell me what Quinoa is. I absolutely refuse to Google it. :D It does look delicious.

  3. Remember when cigarettes went up to 60 cents a pack? I quit back then.

I gotta say, a lamb with boneless legs is sort of disturbing. Prolly easy to catch, though.

I first tasted Buffalo wings at a moose lodge in Buffalo sometime around 1980. Face it, no one really makes Buffalo wings. They weren't dripping in hot sauce or bredded, they were skinless charred to perfection and spicy hot...and free. I especially liked the free part. Those top my list.

I found the perfect chili in a MomPop place in WV back in 1973. I'm still looking for its equal.

Bread! I miss bread. Rye bread with melted butter, Italian bread with garlic toasted under the broiler. French bread in those cute little maid outfi...wait, the mind strays. Toasted Lender's plain beagles were a fave of mine— butter, cinnamon and sugar...OH! and I had a soft pretzel from a Pittsburgh sidewalk cart back in 1970 that still melts my mouth in delight, and it was only a nickle.

Shaky's pizza buffet. Pizza Hut's thick and chewy before they improved it. Have you noticed how new and improved always makes you long for the old and inferior?

Frizzled Ham and Cheese from my fave restaurant in PA. Closed long ago.

Beer...any beer that doesn't say GLUTEN FREE.

*SIGH* I guess I need a time machine to realize my list. Now, where did I put it...

    [Wanders off]

  4. You've got a good list there, JJ. Soft pretzels are something I should seriously consider adding to my list. I don't eat much bread anymore either, but those things are damn good.

And speaking of bread, did I mention chicken and dumplings above?

BTW, Mom and Pop restaurants are sometimes the best places to go for regional food. When I lived in Maine I ate at least once a week in the little place I found the first day I was there. It had the best lobster stew ever and the best fried clams in the universe.

    Thanks for the fish.

  5. That's a good list. I think you may be surprised at how many of those things you can still enjoy while on a di.. die... the D word. A lot has to do with how you cook it.

What would be on my list? Well, there are a lot of things I can't get, down here in the far, far south. One of them is a real Maine lobster. I really want to try one of those. And a crab. One of those giant ones that you see on 'World's Deadliest Catch'. I get hungry every time I watch that program. If I could get one here, it would have been on ice so long that it wouldn't be great. So yeah. I want that. With chips. :)

    1. That may be true (of course it's true) but it ain't diet if you put butter on it.

      Sadly.

But as for seafood, there's some pretty good stuff our your way too. You might not have Maine lobstah, but you've got one that has a very acceptable tail even if there are no claws. And as I recall from my time east of you, you should have access to some awesome prawns. I'd take either of those any day against a king crab. Not that the king crab sucks. :D

You can diet and eat butter at the same time. :)

So how far have you gotten in this list? Post a progress report?

  13. Most successful businesses have created a business plan at some point, usually before their start-up. Why? A business plan is needed to address all of the central components to starting a business. It is essential to make sure that you, as a new entrepreneur have carefully thought through many if not all, of the important components of your business. Ideally, you need to do this BEFORE starting your business. What is a business plan? Business plans are generally prepared for two reasons: 1. To obtain financing for the business 2. To help determine if essential components of starting a business have been considered. Often times with new entrepreneur's (and sometimes even with the more experienced!) they overlook certain aspects of starting a business. So the business plan helps to ensure that most, if not all reasonable questions have been answered and strategies thought about. Although business plans are often considered optional - they serve a vital importance to entrepreneurs. 출장안마

Business Resilience requires an new look at Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity that aligns the risk businesses face today due to Black Swan events with new strategies such as cloud technology. The risk businesses face to their operational readiness today doesn't come from the loss of their IT infrastructure but from the loss of critical staff during regionalized and local disruptive events. Only proactive preparation including planning, training and the design of a resilient facility will mitigate the risk businesses face today. daceasy
